Heathrow Airport, the hub of international arrivals and departures in the United Kingdom and the busiest airport in all of Europe will remain closed today due to a major fire in an electrical substation that supplies power to the airport.

In its social media posts as well as on its website, Heathrow Airport says the closure is likely to last at least until midnight on Friday and hence at least 1,351 flights arriving and departing from the airport will be hit by the closure.

The airport operator has warned that beyond today’s closure, the airport is likely to see serious disruption continue for the next few days and advised passengers not to travel to the airport until it reopens and also to check subsequently with their airline before making their way to the airport.

The fire at the substation in Hayes, in west London, has left thousands of homes without power and caused around 150 people to be evacuated from surrounding properties. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Air India, British Airways, Virgin and Air Canada have over two dozen services from India to Heathrow everyday and many of the flights enroute to Heathrow have been diverted to nearby airports.
