In a significant move towards inclusivity, Emirates the world’s largest international airline company is set to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline. The Dubai-based carrier plans to introduce new services and train staff to enhance air travel for passengers with sensory sensitivities, aligning with Dubai’s vision of becoming the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere.

In a press statement, Emirates says it will receive the Autism Certified Airline designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) in the coming months after its cabin crew and ground staff complete the initial training.

It adds that Emirates will introduce new standards and services for customers with autism and sensory conditions throughout 2025 and beyond, including ‘sensory guides’ and neurodiverse sensory products like fidget toys to improve travel experience.

Emirates says that its new training programme and standards, to be implemented in stages in 2025 and beyond, will enhance comfort for neurodiverse travellers. These efforts align with Dubai’s goal of becoming the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere.

It adds that for many in the global autism community, international air travel is challenging due to sensory stimuli.

The statement adds that a survey found 78 pc of families hesitate to travel, and 94 pc would travel more with autism-trained staff. This step supports Emirates’ mission to make travel more inclusive and aligns with Dubai’s goal to become the world’s most accessible destination.

It adds that Emirates partnered with IBCCES for a comprehensive review and audit, resulting in new standards aimed at enhancing the travel experience for both passengers and staff.

Emirates says that its ground staff and cabin crew will undergo specialised training on autism and sensory awareness to better assist travellers with autism and sensory sensitivities.

It adds that this training builds on the 2023 ‘Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities’ programme will be completed by 23,000 staff.

The statement adds that Emirates achieved Certified Autism Centre designation for all four of its Dubai Check-In facilities, including Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB), in April 2024.

It adds that Emirates’ new training programme and upcoming standards, to be rolled out in 2025, will improve comfort for neurodiverse travellers. These efforts align with Dubai’s vision of becoming the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere.
