Hundreds of flights have been delayed or cancelled at Paris Orly Airport (ORY) after Air Traffic Control systems experienced a breakdown on Sunday.

In a social media post, Aéroports de Paris (ADP), which manages 14 airports in the Paris area, said that ‘due to a breakdown in air traffic control systems at Orly airport, flight delays and cancellations are to be expected’.

On Sunday itself, around 130 flights were cancelled, with half leaving and half arriving at the airport, which is around 40 pc of the 330 scheduled flights, a spokesperson for Aéroports de Paris told French media.

The French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) asked airlines to reduce their evening flight schedules by 40 pc on the day of the breakdown. Flights to Spain, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Ireland, and several French cities were reportedly cancelled, and many others were delayed.

The delays and cancellations have continued on Monday with several flights delayed by over two hours. As many as 36 flights have been cancelled.

The DGAC has advised travellers to contact their airline for updates on flight status and arrangements, adding that the situation is improving but still requires traffic regulation. According to reports, the number of cancellations on Monday could rise to over 50.
