A cold wave sweeping through Delhi has led to major travel disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday. More than 200 domestic and international flights have been delayed due to thick fog covering the region, according to multiple reports.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar, a live flight tracker, shows that about 72 outbound flights are delayed, with six cancellations. Arrival flights were hit even harder, with 215 delays and 10 cancellations. Kolkata airport also faced similar challenges, with 17 departing flights delayed, one cancellation, and 36 inbound flights delayed.
More than a dozen flights of Air India to a variety of destinations in Europe, Asia and Africa have been delayed significantly, as have been flights by IndiGo and SpiceJet, besides a host of international carriers like Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Saudia, Ethiopian and other carriers from around the world. While most flights have been delayed by about an hour, some others have been delayed by 3-5 hours and a few have also been cancelled, according to live flight tracker of Delhi airport.
Airlines including IndiGo and SpiceJet have also advised passengers to expect delays due to the adverse weather conditions. The national capital witnessed dense fog, resulting in zero visibility and in turn prompting warnings from airport authorities about potential disruptions. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for Delhi, anticipating ‘dense to very dense fog’ on Friday.
