Bogota El Dorado Airport (BOG) in Colombia has the highest number of international connections for any airport in Latin America, says a report by aviation data tracking and analysis company OAG.

Analysing the key megahubs in South American continent, OAG says that 13,989 international connections, serving 95 destinations, Bogota tops the list, comfortably ahead of the second best airport, Mexico City (MEX) in the Mexican capital, which has 13,107 international connections to 102 destinations overseas.

OAG says that Bogota Airport is in 20th place globally having moved up nine places since last year’s report was released. It adds that as per September 2024 data, Bogota was also the busiest Latin American airport, based on capacity.

OAG says that Mexico City remains in the global top 50 in 32nd place, though it has moved down from 18th position in 2023. It adds that Mexico is the only country in Latin America to have more than one airport in the top 10 Latin American megahubs’ list, with Cancun (CUN) and Guadalajara (GDL) in 8th and 9th places, respectively.

However, it points out that Cancun is the only other airport in the Latin American top 10 to have fallen down the global rankings year on year, slipping from 61st to 82nd place.

OAG adds that with 9,414 international connctions to 107 international destinations, Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport in Brazil is the third most-connected airport in the region, says OAG.

In terms of busiest airlines in Latin America, OAG says that Latam Airlines is the biggest airline, based on capacity by a long way, and is the dominant carrier in three of the top 10 megahubs in the region, namely São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), with a 51 pc share, Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru with a 60 pc share and Santiago International Airport (SCL) in Chile with 58 pc share.

The largest airline serving Bogota is Avianca, with 56 pc of all flights to and from Bogota. For Mexico City, it is Aeromexico with 58 pc share of all flights, says OAG.
