Bhutan Airlines, Bhutan’s sole private airline, will launch a seasonal service between Paro and Hong Kong on January 27.

In a press statement, Bhutan Airlines says that it will operate a total of 16 rotations scheduled during peak holiday periods, adding that it will deploy its two-class Airbus A319 aircraft to Hong Kong, with 12 business class recliners in a 2-2 configuration and 114 economy class seats.

The airline says it will also introduce similar seasonal flights to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and to Vietnam. Established in 2011, Bhutan Airlines is the first and only private airline in Bhutan based in Paro.

The airline operates a small fleet of two A319 aircraft and offers scheduled and charter flights to various international destinations, including Bangkok, Kathmandu, Delhi and Kolkata.

The airline says that visitors from Hong Kong, China and Singapore must obtain a visa before travelling to Bhutan, which can be applied for online with an application fee of USD 40 and generally requires five working days for processing.

Visitors are obligated to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per night, per adult, with concessionary rates for children, which supports various local projects.

Bhutan has not yet fully opened to independent travel. Visitors can apply for visas, purchase flights, book accommodation and pay the sustainable development fee on their own. However, most attractions and tours in Bhutan still require the accompaniment of local guides.

“We are thrilled to announce Hong Kong as our third destination for the 2025 fixed departure flights. We understand that the holiday season is a popular time for travellers, and we have designed these schedules with that in mind, offering Hongkongers an opportunity to explore Bhutan, one of Asia’s unique destinations,” says Pema Nadik, CEO, Bhutan Airlines.

Bhutan Airlines received its first aircraft on December 4, 2011, when it obtained a Pilatus PC12 configured to accommodate 8 passengers, initiating domestic operations. Subsequently, marking its global presence, the airline embarked on its first international flight from Paro to Bangkok on October 10, 2013, and soon after, commenced daily scheduled flights to Kolkata on December 16, 2013. The airline says that orchestrating these vital routes is an Airbus A320 aircraft, capable of comfortably seating 150 passengers.

Today, Bhutan Airlines operates with a fleet featuring two A319 aircraft, designed to accommodate 126 passengers, including 12 Business Class seats, alongside 114 Economy seats. The airline’s services encompass daily flights from Bangkok to Paro via Kolkata, India, as well as three weekly flights to Delhi via Kathmandu.
