Amsterdam Schiphol airport has unveiled the latest phase of its Lounge 1 redevelopment, with the addition of 5,000 sqm of extra passenger space.
In a press statement, the airport, one of the busiest in Europe, says that the new area has been created by converting a car park and parts of four existing buildings into a new plaza, featuring trees and bamboo wall panels.
It adds that the space features more passenger seating, and work over the next few months will see the addition of new Food and Beverage and retail outlets. It says that the expansion is part of the wider redevelopment and future-proofing of the 20,000 sqm Lounge 1, which is used by intra-European travellers.
In September, Schiphol had outlined plans to invest EUR 6 billion between 2024 and 2029, with works including the renewal and maintenance of facilities including Pier C, climate-control systems, escalators, aircraft stands and taxiways.
The airport’s Pier A, that has been delayed, will be opened in April 2027 with a total of eight narrowbody and widebody gates, as well as security filters, border control facilities, and retails and F&B outlets over three floors.
The airport operator says that work is also set to commence on a new baggage basement in 2026.
“The finished plaza is a new part of Schiphol to be proud of, and an important step in the redevelopment of the airport. It is the transformation of the oldest part of our airport into a modern, bright space, while also replacing fundamental parts. Literally and figuratively a strong piece of work. This new area sets a new standard for how we want to welcome passengers, with more space, comfort and modern facilities. It is one example of our efforts to align the space available at Schiphol with passenger numbers. We continue to work hard on making Schiphol future-proof, with quality and experience being the focus,” says Sybren Hahn, Executive Director Schiphol Infrastructure.
The airport operator recently announced plans to increase its airport charges by 37 pc from 2027, an average hike of EUR 15 over the current taxes.
